Rural Archive Project

Documenting
Rural America

Across this country, countless towns hold rich histories and carry the weight of dwindling populations. Their stories deserve to be told — and preserved so future generations will know them firsthand.

Who we are

Journalists with
roots in the land

We're a small team of journalists and documentarians with a deep passion for the places most people drive past without stopping. Between us we have decades of field experience — in print, broadcast, and long-form storytelling — and a shared belief that no community is too small to deserve a careful record.

We show up, we listen, and we get it right. That's the whole job.

Our Mission

Document, archive,
and remember

We believe that the story of a place does not end when its last store closes or its last school consolidates. We exist to capture what remains — and what was — before time takes the rest.

01

Field Documentation

On-the-ground reporting: photography, video, audio, and written profiles of rural towns at every stage of life and decline.

02

Oral History Archive

Long-form recorded interviews with residents — their memories preserved in their own words, accents, and cadence, without editorial filter.

03

Public Access

Everything we collect is made freely available through our digital archive, partnered libraries, and regional historical societies.
